At Poplawski Bariatric we perform several bariatric procedures:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Adjustable Gastric Banding
Revisional and/or corrective operations on previously performed bariatric operations
Dr. Poplawski will work with you to help determine the best procedure for you. These decisions are based on your own personal preference along with a careful review of your medical history. No two people are the same. Our goal is to help you to make an informed decision based on your preferences and medical needs.
We will also offer recommendations based on our experience.
This is a hard one to put a firm number on. So much depends on the procedure and even more importantly, your commitment to the life style changes that you will have to make. Also, there are many factors that will effect the amount of weight you lose, like how much and how often you exercise, The exercisers do better. Also important is your ability to change your diet to healthier foods. Patients who are careful with their diet do better. Patients who don't make these changes, don't do as well.
Below we are listing the procedures and the predictions reported in the medical literature for weight loss for each procedure. All statistics are based on first year's average weight loss for a patient population and are not a guarantee of individual results.
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y (Gastric Bypass)- Individuals tend to lose about 65 - 70 percent of excess body weight during the first year.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy- Individuals tend to loose about 50 - 60 percent of their excess body weight during the first year.
Adjustable Gastric Band- The medical literature reports a 35 to 40 percent excess weight loss after three years.
Like all things in nature, these weight loss results tend to fall into a "normal distribution", a bell shaped curve. These results are the for the average patient. The regular exercisers do better. The patients who are very careful about their food choices will do better. Where you end up at on that curve does depend a lot on your behavior after the operation.
As with all surgery, there are risks associated. However, when performed with care and attention to the patients needs and history, these risks can be reduced. This is why you need to let the team at Poplawski Bariatric know about any health related conditions or issues you may have.
Below are some of the risks of bariatric surgery. We suggest you look throughout this site, and review all of the information we provide, and of course before having any procedure make sure you ask Doc Pop and his staff any questions you may have. We want you informed as much as possible.
Some of the more common complications are:
Less than ideal weight loss.
